Information on the CLPNNS

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia (CLPNNS) is the governing body for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in Nova Scotia.

In order that the public trust may be served and protected, the objects and purpose of this Act are to empower the College to regulate the practice of Licensed Practical Nurses.

LPNs care for the public in a variety of care settings, acute care, long-term care, home care, and community. Only those holding a CURRENT Certificate of Registration are permitted to use the title ' Licensed Practical Nurse'.

Professional Conduct Committees

Complaints Committee

Each complaint received by the College about an LPN's practice is thoroughly investigated. The Complaints Committee reviews the results of investigations about nursing practice and/or conduct of registrants and decides how to dispose of the complaint.

Discipline Committee

The Discipline Committee holds hearings in cases where an LPN has been referred by the Complaints Committee because of alleged professional misconduct, incompetence and/or incapacity. The Discipline Committee hears evidence regarding each case and the Discipline Committee disposes of the case according to Regulations Section 35.

If a member's license is revoked, the registrant no longer is licensed, may not use the title LPN, nor hold himself/herself out as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

The College Office

The College's main regulatory functions are Registration, Professional Conduct Processes, Entry to Practice and Continuing Competency requirements for LPNs. Other responsibilities are as directed by the LPN Act and Regulations.

Registration

The Executive Director/Registrar and the Deputy Registrar review/assess all applications for licensing. The College registers new graduates of Nova Scotia and reviews applications from applicants from other provinces and countries. In addition, the College administers the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).

Education re: Standards

The Executive Director/Registrar facilitates the understanding of generally accepted Standards of Education of the profession and the implications of legislation. The Executive Director/Registrar acts as a resource for LPNs, employers, educators, the public and government by interpreting the LPN Standards of Nursing Practice. The Executive Director/Registrar also organizes and facilitates sessions to provide information regarding the application of Standards and the application of legislative requirements.

Executive Director/Registrar

The Executive Director/Registrar coordinates and monitors the activities of the College including assisting in the development of College policies, procedures, programs and the budget.

The Executive Director/Registrar provides information to the public, Board members, and other health care professionals, to build their awareness and understanding of the College responsibilities and activities.

Other Nursing Organizations

The Board meets regularly and partners with a number of organizations that impact on nursing. The College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) is the professional and regulatory body for RNs. The NSNU, NSGEU and CUPE are trade unions that represent some of the Licensed Practical Nurses in Nova Scotia as their bargaining unit. The Nova Scotia Community College, (NSCC) presently, is the source of all LPN core and post graduate educational programs.
